Care Connect of Hampton Roads recently received a call from two adult children about their mother who resided in a Virginia Beach independent living home, but unfortunately was no longer safe to remain there due to increased cognitive impairment from dementia.
The adult children were in a panic because one child lives in California and the other in Florida, while mother resides in Hampton Roads. The children explained that they had:
• Exhausted leave at work.
• Knew that they needed to address their mother's long-term care situation.
• But had limited time, limited assets and very limited knowledge of what to do about elder care issues.
Our elder care planning professionals gathered their mother's medical and financial information over the phone and I quickly explained that we would be able to assist in identifying all feasible assisted living options that would make sense medically and financially.
We scheduled for the adult children to meet with us in our office while they were in Virginia Beach for a few days. During that short period of time we:
• | Located a private assisted living care home to move their mother in to. |
• | Negotiated the monthly rent to ensure that it would be covered 100% by their mother's current monthly income. |
• | Identified that their mother is eligible to apply for and receive an additional $1,130 per month in tax-free pension from the Veterans Administration to help offset the cost of the assisted living care. We are currently handling every aspect of her VA Aid and Attendance pension program application process. This VA money is available to veterans, or their widowed spouses, when the veteran served 90 days or more of active duty, with one day during a period of wartime. |
• | This additional income will allow the family to conserve remaining assets and also provide additional income to handle future annual increases by the assisted living home. |
The children said we lifted a huge burden off of them, and that they felt much better about their mother’s living arrangements and quality of life. In addition, they signed up for our Monthly Elder Care Plan where we provide unlimited access to our care management consulting, un-announced personal care visits to mom’s assisted living home, advocacy, and more.
Every client situation is unique and this is why we NEVER take a cookie cutter approach with any elder care situation. Timely, accurate information is the key and it is crucial that the family be made aware of every feasible option.
If you need help with finding an independent living home for father's or mother's long-term care situation, elder care issues, assisted living options, assisted living care home, or the VA Aid and Attendance pension program, and live in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Newport News, Hampton, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Williamsburg, Hampton Roads, North Carolina, Currituck, the Outer banks or beyond, our elder care company and elder care planning professionals can help.
