‘Medicaid’ doesn't have to be a bad word!
By Christina Drumm-Boyd, Care Connect of Hampton Roads – 4/13/2015
We often have clients that question whether they should apply for Medicaid or perhaps seek a Veterans pension for themselves or a loved one. The correct answer is "that depends".
It depends on the individual’s situation...meaning:
• What are the elder care goals for the loved one?
• What are the assets that are remaining on hand?
• What is the monthly income?
• What will the approximate monthly costs of care be?
While there are certainly a lot of variables to consider, one thing that I have learned over the years as an elder care consultant is that we can have really great outcomes for clients who have planned appropriately prior to transitioning there loved one to Medicaid.
With appropriate planning, typically a client can conserve assets and also transition into a high quality Medicaid community. Contrary to common belief, when a loved one is in receipt of Medicaid they are not subject to receiving sub-par care. This doesn't mean that there is any guarantee that there won't be concerns or issues with care -- that can happen in any elder care facility. But Medicaid does not necessarily equate to poor care.
Advising our clients on every feasible option is what our elder care company has successfully done every day since 2006. Caregivers are very overwhelmed, we understand that. We do the best we can to alleviate that stress and create a plan of care that will accomplish the best possible outcome.
